How Not To Be A Jerk is a simple list (with mild explanation) on how people can easily check themselves when dealing with other humans. Today, we'll delve into the Customer Service aspect.
So we all know that the people in Customer Service are human beings. Intrinsically, we all KNOW this. Many of us have or still are IN the customer service industry. We wait tables, we handle complaints, we clean and cook and provide services.
Regrettably, there are those of you out there who are as of yet unaware that the people who provide you with your nice things, ARE in fact fellow humans. SO here's your first tip.
Please. Please don't waste their time.
We have the internet now, it's a pretty fantastic concept. Literally all the information in the world is at your fingertips. Including (but not limited to) Store Hours.
If you find yourself eating somewhere, and you're relying on pre-COVID memory to recall when they close, chances are that You Are Wrong.
I know. In your head, you are aware that 'The Customer Is Always Right.' But here is how you can Not Be A Jerk about it.
Check the hours.
If you're there when the store is closing, this is very important -- c'mere, lean in, I'm only going to say this once --
LEAVE.
Don't sit there while the staff are dumping coffee pots and shutting off the fountain machine. Don't poke at your phone and peruse the baked goods while the staff are putting them away for the night. Don't leisurely continue your conversation int he otherwise empty shop while the staff clean all the other tables and start putting up chairs.
You aren't the only person in the universe, Karen.
Get your shit, let them finish their job, and leave.
They want to go home.
Thanks so much.
